KRSM PROJECT MANAGER DEPLOYS WITH DISASTER RESPONSE TEAM

KRSM Project Manager Stephen Coyle recently visited Houston, Texas with his Disaster Response Team (DRT)  through Southbrook Church in Miamisburg, Ohio where they partnered with Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief to help those who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. A DRT is a group of volunteers who are prepared and trained year-round to respond to any natural or man-made disasters locally, across the U.S., or abroad. Stephen and his team partnered with several different disaster relief agencies to be dispatched to a disaster area. Altogether, there were a total of 16 people sent to Texas with Stephen’s DRT to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Throughout the week, Stephen and his team worked on gutting and cleaning houses that have been abandoned by families and ones that have been quarantined since the flooding occurred. Some of the houses were only affected by a couple feet of water while others were swallowed by flood waters up to their roofs. Altogether, the team successfully gutted and cleaned 10 houses during their five days of work.

Even though Stephen and his team are back home, hundreds of other volunteers are still working in Texas each week. Samaritan’s Purse plans to continue working throughout the month of November and then start the rebuild process which is expected to take a total of two years.

This is not Stephen’s first trip to help others in need, but it was his first trip through a deployment agency. “The most rewarding part of the experience is meeting the homeowners that we are working for, to encourage them and let them know that above sending much needed funding, there are people willing to help,” Stephen said. People from all across the country have come to help with relief efforts. Some volunteers have even come from as far away as Alberta, Canada. “I am grateful for the time off to have had this opportunity to help,” Stephen added.

We sincerely appreciate Stephen, and we are proud to call him a member of the Kalkreuth team. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to those affected by the flooding, as well as all of the volunteers helping with clean-up.

KALKREUTH PARTNERING WITH LOCAL SCHOOL

October 2017 – East Coast Metal Systems (ECMS) and Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) have been working closely with local schools and colleges regarding opportunities within their Drafting, Auto-CAD and Career and Technical Education programs (CTE).

CTE is coursework that helps students receive a post-secondary degree or industry-recognized certificate or credential, otherwise known as programs of study. CTE gives high school students the chance to get ahead and start preparing for college and careers with experience in actual working situations while gaining knowledge about their chosen industry. From school to school, these programs differ but they offer the potential benefits of either entering the workforce directly out of high school or earning college credits toward their chosen post-secondary program.

Although this is still in the beginning phases, ECMS has had the opportunity to tour the John Marshall High School facility and John Marshall CTE Administrators have toured the ECMS facility. Research is also underway to examine whether local school curriculums are compatible with industry standards. Students who are currently interested in a Drafting and Engineering profession may feel that they must move in order to obtain a lucrative career. ECMS and KRSM are striving to make students aware of local career opportunities in an overall goal of supporting local institutions in efforts to educate our community’s youth and provide opportunities for students to intern throughout the summer months or start a career. Current openings are within the sheet metal fabrication shop at ECMS in Triadelphia, WV and within the submittal department at KRSM headquarters in Wheeling, WV.

Both East Coast Metal Systems and Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal are looking forward to opportunities to support local CTE Programs.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE – STEM BUILDING

October 2017 – The Howard Community College Science, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) Building is a recently completed multi-million dollar, pending LEED silver project located in Columbia, Maryland.

Over the course of the project, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) provided the installation of 28,000 square feet of Terra Cotta Rain Screen, 18,000 square feet of aluminum composite panels (ACM), 3,800 square feet of perforated panels and 2,000 square feet of metal wall panels. East Coast Metal Systems (ECMS) fabricated 19,600 square feet of ACM pressure-equalized rain screen.

KRSM Sheet Metal Foreman Jeremy Persinger stated that this was the largest metal job that he and his crew had ever worked on. In addition to the overall scope of the project, the size and weight of the panels provided additional installation challenges on the four-story building.

To make sure that the large panels were mounted properly, some crew members stood inside the building holding pieces while others stood on lifts to secure them.  “We gained a lot of knowledge from this project and we will be able to apply what we learned to larger projects in the future,” said Persinger.

A focus on safety also played a very important role during the project, and it was completed successfully without any issues. “You can’t successfully complete a job without the manpower and you are only as good as your crew,” said Persinger, “I was lucky enough to have a crew that worked hard, worked safe, and helped complete the project on time.”

Thanks to employees of both KRSM and ECMS for all the time, hard work and dedication that was put into this successful project. Good job and keep up the good work!
