NRCA COMPETITION RESULTS IN UNEXPECTED WIN FOR KRSM

MARCH 2017 – On Thursday, March 2, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Project Manager Paul Novak served as a mentor for a team of University of Cincinnati (UC) students who participated in the third annual Alliance Construction Management (CM) Student Competition hosted by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) at their International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas.

The four UC students who competed were Brian Mallernee (team captain), Matt Hudak, Daniel Kurtz, and Michael Kadash, all of whom have served one or more terms in the Kalkreuth Intern/Co-op Program. Paul Novak, who is an alumnus of UC, served as the Alliance Member Team Mentor and was able to generate a relationship with the UC CM professor who assisted the group in their presentation, Jason Mack.

“Even though the UC team did not win the competition, it provided an opportunity for Jason and I to discuss the need to increase awareness of the roofing industry among CM students within their curriculum,” Paul said. “Per Jason’s recommendation, KRSM has been invited to teach a roofing class at the University this fall. We are sincerely appreciative of Jason and and his efforts to advocate roofing.”

QUARTERLY SAFETY MEETINGS & RECOGNIZING SAFETY ACHIEVEMENT

MARCH 2017- Last month, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) regional divisions held their quarterly safety meetings beginning on February 3rd in Kentucky.
Seth Abraham, Director of Safety and Human Resources, attended each meeting and presented new job hazard analysis forms to the crews, discussed corporate safety statistics, and advocated proper protocol for reporting safety hazards and daily jobsite conditions.“I have seen positive changes in the safety culture, and our overall awareness and implementation of safety best practices has continued to improve,” noted Jeremy Dvorcek, Eastern Territory Safety Manager for KRSM.

FOREMAN SPOTLIGHT: JULIO TEJADA

MARCH 2017- Julio Tejada with Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) Maryland division is this month’s featured sheet metal foreman.

Julio began working for KRSM as a sheet metal journeyman in 2006 and is now a sheet metal foreman. He recalled that one of his first projects with KRSM was the National Biodefense Agency and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) in Fort Detrick, Maryland, and he is currently working on multiple fast-paced, quick-hitting projects across Maryland.

Julio has a total of 25 years experience in the industry and has worked on several high-profile projects during his time with Kalkreuth. A few of the memorable projects he mentioned were Silver Spring Library, Frederick News Post, and the Concord Center.

“It is always a pleasure working with Julio,” said Operations Manager Ernie Giancola, who works with
him frequently. “His focus and attention to detail ensures that the quality of installation is always to the high standard KRSM strives for on every pro-ject.”
When asked about safety on the job, Julio said “I make sure my projects are completed safely, and I try to always lead by example.” He went on to say, “I care about my coworkers and don’t want to see anyone getting hurt.”

“One of the things I enjoy most about working for Kalkreuth is the relationships I’ve built with office staff and fellow sheet metal workers. These relationships promote good chemistry that contributes to a successful project outcome,” Julio added.

Julio lives in Laurel, MD and has two children, Christian (17) and Milton Cruz (16). We are proud to have Julio as a member of the Kalkreuth family and sincerely appreciate his continuous hard work since he began in 2006.

LEED V4 UPDATE

FEBRUARY 2017- On Wednesday, February 22, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Senior Engineer Ed Calvert, LEED AP BD+C, GRP, organized a meeting and presented information on the new version of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design version 4 (LEED v4) green building rating system, which is now in effect for all new projects as of October 2016.

Estimators, project managers, engineers, and other personnel within the company, across all divisions, gathered to review the updates. Ed was able to pull information provided by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) in order to review differences and changes from the previous version of LEED, as well as how the new system will directly affect the roofing and wall system building trades.

“LEED is the future of construction,” Ed said. “It’s steadily gaining traction throughout the industry, and many regions and cities, such as DC and Pittsburgh, have begun to make green building practices mandatory. Everyone from design teams to general contractors to subcontractors needs to be aware of the implications of new-and-improved green building methods as they continue to increase in prevalence. It’s better for the environment, and it helps to create better buildings.”

LEEDv4 has introduced some stricter guidelines and tracking methods for materials used, waste disposal, storm water man-agement, and various other aspects of energy efficiency. “The entire KRSM team is striving to stay one step ahead,” Ed said.
