Case study
Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal played a pivotal role in installing the Beckley Travel Plaza. Part of a broader $120‑160 million program over multiple plazas (Beckley, Bluestone, Morton) to rebuild travel plazas. The Beckley Travel Plaza reopened in December 2024.
Objectives & Challenges
- Durability and weather performance for a high‑visibility roadside facility exposed to West Virginia’s varied climate (rain, snow, heat, freeze/thaw cycles).
- Visual impact: The design called for a striking, clean, modern architecture to make the plaza a landmark and beacon for travelers. Roofing and facade panels needed to contribute to that aesthetic.
- Integration with other elements: The roofing and metal panels had to interface cleanly with curtain wall/glass walls, large canopies, overhangs, and structural elements (to maintain aesthetic lines, waterproofing, insulation, etc.).
- Tight schedule: Given the plaza closed in early 2023 for demolition and renovation, and reopening by late 2024 / December for Beckley, there was limited time for envelope work.
Results & Impact
- The finished plaza offers a state‑of‑the‑art facility that includes expanded amenities (Starbucks, Wendy’s, Popeyes, 24/7 Mountain State Market), EV charging stations, improved restrooms, separated fueling for vehicles/trucks, etc.
- Aesthetic transformation: The roofing + metal composite panels contribute to the “glass house inspired” design, with sweeping canopies, dramatic overhangs, mixing of natural materials and modern finishes. Makes the structure not only functional but visually engaging.
- Increased capacity and usability: Expanded parking (including for trucks), more daylight, better internal climate control (benefits of a good roofing and envelope system).
Kalkreuth Roofing’s work installing ~40,000 sq ft of TPO roofing and ~24,200 sq ft of metal composite panels was a critical contribution to the Beckley Travel Plaza’s successful transformation. The roofing and cladding envelope not only met functional demands (weather, durability, maintenance) but also played a large role in achieving the ambitious design goals of beauty, visibility, and a sense of place. The resulting facility is much more than a rest stop — it showcases what thoughtful infrastructure design can do for travel experience and for regional pride.
Recognition
We are proud that the Beckley Travel Plaza was recognized with a 2025 ENR Mid-Atlantic Regional Best Projects Award of Merit. This annual award recognizes excellence in design and construction across the United States.
