STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING

Standing seam metal roofing is fabricated from flat metal material that is roll-formed with a flat horizontal pan and vertical ribs on each side. The flat pan is typically from 12” to 18” wide and the ribs are most often 1” to 3” high. The panels can be made in various profiles for increased stiffness or aesthetic appearance. The seams are made watertight by “locking” or folding over the tops of the vertical ribs, and the top of the standing seam is held above the pan so that running water will not flood into the seam. The panels are held in place by clips which are located inside of the seam. Panels can be made from a wide selection of metal materials and either natural or painted finish, depending on the type of metal.

FEATURES

  • Designed for relatively little chance of water filtration so long as there is proper slope and flashing
  • Very few exposed fasteners
  • Vertical ribs for strength and aesthetic appeal
  • Can attach claps to the seams to mount items such as snow rails, solar panels and walkways

OPTIONS

  • Variety of metal materials such as galvanized or galvalume steel, aluminum, zinc, copper, and terne
  • Numerous finishes such as natural, patina, painted, or pre-weathered
  • Many size options available in various widths, lengths and profiles

Flat Seam

Flat seam panel construction is typically found on historic structures where quality vintage craftsmanship was used. Pieces of metal are fabricated with relatively flat joints in varying sizes; most often small enough to be easily handled. Materials most likely used were copper or lead-coated metal, and the seams were soldered together on the roof. These materials can still be fabricated and installed using the same process and soldered together; although, new modern panel profiles made from galvanized steel and aluminum are on the market. The new style of galvanized steel or aluminum flat seam panel is not soldered but typically installed as a rainscreen-type assembly with a painted finish.

FEATURES

  • Most-often found using high-quality natural materials which are soldered together with the utmost in fine craftsmanship
  • Natural materials most often have an organic finish that will patina and change as it weathers
  • Soldering ensures complete watertightness in the panel seam
  • Modern painted flat seam panels are economically constructed as a rainscreen-type assembly

OPTIONS

  • Soldered seams or snapped-together rainscreen assemblies
  • Choice of metal materials and finishes
