Ron Smith’s journey at East Coast Metal Systems began in 1998, fueled by a passion for welding and working with his hands. A friend told him about the opportunity, so applying was a no-brainer. His first project was the West Virginia Northern Community College’s B&O Building, which involved skinning radius dormers with metal. However, Ron’s most memorable project is the OU Athens job.
“There was a lot of radius corner flashing that needed figuring, and it was complicated.”
Ron oversees the afternoon crew at the metal shop, leading many projects simultaneously. This role plays to his strengths and passion, allowing him to teach others the many things he has learned in the trade.
“I like that we learn new things every day because things are always changing, and we always get new equipment to expedite our work.”
Outside of work, Ron’s life is equally rich and fulfilling. He recently purchased a house in Bellaire, Ohio, which he and his wife have completely renovated. They have two children and two cats, but their family recently expanded with his daughter’s marriage, making him a “Pappy” to two teenage girls. Ron is also an avid woodworker and loves to spend time restoring his prized possession, his 1948 International pickup truck.
Not only is Ron a foreman, but he’s a mentor, a craftsman, and a family man. His commitment to work, learning, and adapting makes him a remarkable member of our team.
