30 YEAR CLUB — RECOGNITION OF EMPLOYEE SERVICE

MARCH 2018 – At the 2018 Annual Kalkreuth Company Meeting, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) recognized employees who have been with the company for over 30 years and welcomed them into the ‘30 Year Club’.

One of the longest working employees is Bill Sokolowski who began working for KRSM in 1981. Bill started as a roofer and worked in several transitional roles including Inside Coordinator and Wheeling General Manager, and he is now a Senior Estimator. “Planning jobs and seeing them take off is my favorite part about working for KRSM,” said Bill. He has worked in many departments within the company and understands it in-side and out. Some of his marquee projects include Ford in Norfolk, Virginia and the Health Sciences Building at West Virginia University.

Stan Gorczyca also began working with the company in 1981. Beginning in the yard loading and unloading material, Stan worked his way up the ladder to a roofer and is now a Senior Project Manager. The PNC Tower in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the Harrison County Courthouse in Cadiz, Ohio are just a couple of the many large projects that Stan has been involved with. “I am proud to say that I have worked for the company for a total of over 35 years. With everything we have been through, it is amazing to see where we are today,” said Stan.

Chuck King started working for KRSM in 1982 as an apprentice in the sheet metal shop where he eventually worked his way to the field. He is currently a Journeyman Foreman. Chuck has worked on many high-profile projects including the Baltimore-Washington International Airport in Baltimore, Maryland and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH. “I owe it all to Jim and John. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Chuck.

In 1985, Greg Owens began working for KRSM in the sheet metal shop as well. He is now a Journeyman Foreman. Greg has also worked on numerous high-profile jobs throughout his years including Mt. Olive Prison in Charleston, West Virginia and Larkins Hall at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. “I enjoy what I do so much. There are so many different projects that are more technical and challenging,” said Greg.

Ohio Division Manager Pat Hurley also began in 1985. Pat started working in sales throughout college and eventually transitioned from running the sheet metal side to establishing the Maryland office and finally man-aging Ohio. Some of his key projects include the Franklin County Court-house in Ohio and NBACC at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland.

Sheet Metal Division Manager Ed Gavorcik from Adena, OH has also been with the company for over 30 years and began in 1986 as a Sheet Metal Apprentice. “Between new products and the different varieties of metal used, no day is ever the same. It’s satisfying working through challenges and John and Jim have been great throughout the years” said Ed. Some of the large-scale projects that Ed has been involved in includes Ohio University in Athens, OH and Cincinnati University Tegument in Cincinnati, OH.

“We sincerely appreciate your hard work and dedication over the years; we wouldn’t be where we are today without each and every one of you,” said company Chairman John Kalkreuth. “I know I can count on each of you to do your job to the best of your ability, and that is invaluable,” said KRSM President and CEO Jim Hurley.

FOREMAN REACHES 23 YEARS OF SERVICE

March 2018 – This month marks 23 years of service for Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Sheet Metal Foreman Scott Sikora.

Scott started working for KRSM in 1995 as an apprentice in the sheet metal shop. He remained in that position for five years and then moved to the field as a foreman, which is his current position. Scott has always been interested in sheet metal and the construction industry and enjoys working on challenging projects as well as being outdoors.

Although Scott has enjoyed working on many projects over the years, he noted the First Mariner Bank in Baltimore, Maryland as his most memorable. He appreciated the opportunity to recognize and overcome the challenges of working on that project.

Scott enjoys working for Kalkreuth and getting to meet new people. “Being on time, working hard, and following all safety rules is a breeze. Safety is, and will always be, the most important aspect of each job,” said Scott.

Kalkreuth is sincerely grateful for your many years of continuous dedication and hard work. Thank you, Scott, and keep up the good work!

NEW LEADER AWARD

MARCH 2018 – Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Business Development Manager Lyndsey Martin received the New Leader Award through the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Lexington-Bluegrass Chapter.

Lyndsey recently became a board member of the Lexington Chapter of NAWIC and focused on increasing membership numbers. Lyndsey’s name had been suggested by the group to receive this award in which members then voted for the winner. Nominees were people who have taken active roles, shown excellent leadership qualities, and worked to improve the chapter in various ways.

We are proud to have Lyndsay working so hard to build industry relationships and being involved within her community. Great job Lyndsey, and keep up the good work!

KALKREUTH PROJECT OF THE MONTH – FAIRMONT STATE UNIVERSITY TERRACE

MARCH 2018 – Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) is featuring the University Terrace Student Housing at Fairmont State University as our “Project of the Month.”

Construction for the University Terrace, located in Fairmont, West Virginia, began in 2015 and was run by KRSM Project Manager Chris Lemmon. Four different 1960s apartment buildings were torn down and replaced by three brand new, state-of-the-art housing facilities. This new construction project features single apartments, double apartments, quads, and semi-suites and will offer 345 beds to its students nearly tripling the amount of space compared to the previous buildings including a common area connecting two of the buildings.

The project was completed in 2016 under a tight schedule approaching the fall semester of classes. Altogether, KRSM installed over 220,000 square feet of Tuscan and Vintage Wood fiber cement panels across both four-story buildings and the free-standing three-story building.

Great job to everyone involved and keep up the good work!

ANNUAL KALKREUTH PROJECT MANAGER MEETING

March 2018 – Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) held its first ever Project Manager Meeting at Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia February 18-20.

The Kalkreuth Project Manager Meeting is meant to serve as an industry best practices training and refresher tool for all project managers company-wide as well as a mutually beneficial networking opportunity for our valued vendor partners across all of our geographic markets.

The event started with an introduction and networking opportunity between KRSM Project Managers from all office locations and outside vendors and speakers who attended the three-day meeting. The speakers at the meeting included industry professionals from within KRSM as well as external presenters who discussed the importance of safety practices, contracts and relationships, project manager fundamentals, and technical issues and risks. VaproShield and Knight Wall Systems presented “Lunch and Learn” opportunities to inform and interact with attendees. Overall, the meeting provided vital information and was a great refresher for all project managers and even provided the opportunity for employees to build relationships with coworkers from other locations.

Without the continued support of our valued vendor partners, events like the Kalkreuth Project Manager Meeting wouldn’t be possible. Our company’s success is largely attributed to the strong construction industry network we’ve spent over three decades building and includes each of our vendor partners.

We would like to thank all of our meeting sponsors including DeWalt, THOMCO, Hydrotech, Knight Wall Systems, VaproShield, and Terreal North America. Thanks to everyone involved who made this learning opportunity a success!

FIRST QUARTER SAFETY MEETINGS

March 2018 – Last month, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal held its first quarter safety meetings company-wide. Attendees included foremen, superintendents, project managers, and field employees.

Fire prevention, lessons learned, and JHA requirements were the main focuses for these meetings. The safety department tracks trends in the workplace such as fall protection, electrical, and PPE violations. From there, these trends are used to identify topics that need to be covered or used as refresher training to help reduce the probability of serious injuries in the workplace.

“These meetings are designed to keep safe working conditions in the forefront of on-the-job practices and procedures. When an employee is not following proper safety protocol and a preventable injury occurs, it can unfortunately involve lost time, medical bills, coworkers assuming additional tasks, and above all the decreased health and wellness of our team members. Unsafe work practices directly affect everyone. By holding these meetings once a quarter, it allows employees to address any issues with existing safety protocol and equipment in order to prevent injury and make sure our guys get home safely. The theory of continuous improvement allows the organization to adopt industry best practices to help reduce the possibility of injury,” said KRSM Safety Manager Kevin Barnhart.

LEED AP BD+C RENEWAL

March 2018 – Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Senior Engineer, LEED AP BD+C, GRP Ed Calvert recently renewed his LEED AP BD+C credentials.

Calvert initially passed the certification process four years ago. Over the past two years, he had to report at least 30 continuing educations hours, 6 of which had to be LEED-specific topics for building design and construction. Altogether, Calvert nearly doubled the required hours and reported a total of 56.5 hours, including 27.5 hours that were classified as LEED-specific.

“The USGBC requires continuing education and re-certification of credentials every 2 years because the technology, materials, installation techniques, and building sciences are constantly being updated. It is important to stay up to date on the latest technology in order to remain at the forefront of our field. Education is a key factor in sustainability, and sustainability plays a large role in the future of KRSM,” said Calvert.

UNION CORRUGATING COMPANY MEETING

February 2019 – Last month, East Coast Metal Systems (ECMS) Sheet Metal Division Manager Ed Gavorcik traveled to Tipp, Ohio to present custom gutter and downspout fabrication capabilities to representatives of Union Corrugating Company.

ECMS and Union Corrugating Company have been working closely together to create a catalog and samples of gutters and downspouts for customers. Once a customer has decided on a product, a representative will then reach out to ECMS to fabricate the order. ECMS has already completed 8 projects with them and has additional projects scheduled for the future.

Overall, ECMS has opened a new door for Union Corrugated with fully customizable orders and the ability to fabricate gutters up to 26 feet long. We are glad to have this great relationship with Union Corrugated and continue to strive for customer satisfaction.

Great job Ed, keep up the hard work!
