PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – HOWARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE – STEM BUILDING

October 2017 – The Howard Community College Science, Engineering, and Technology (STEM) Building is a recently completed multi-million dollar, pending LEED silver project located in Columbia, Maryland.

Over the course of the project, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) provided the installation of 28,000 square feet of Terra Cotta Rain Screen, 18,000 square feet of aluminum composite panels (ACM), 3,800 square feet of perforated panels and 2,000 square feet of metal wall panels. East Coast Metal Systems (ECMS) fabricated 19,600 square feet of ACM pressure-equalized rain screen.

KRSM Sheet Metal Foreman Jeremy Persinger stated that this was the largest metal job that he and his crew had ever worked on. In addition to the overall scope of the project, the size and weight of the panels provided additional installation challenges on the four-story building.

To make sure that the large panels were mounted properly, some crew members stood inside the building holding pieces while others stood on lifts to secure them.  “We gained a lot of knowledge from this project and we will be able to apply what we learned to larger projects in the future,” said Persinger.

A focus on safety also played a very important role during the project, and it was completed successfully without any issues. “You can’t successfully complete a job without the manpower and you are only as good as your crew,” said Persinger, “I was lucky enough to have a crew that worked hard, worked safe, and helped complete the project on time.”

Thanks to employees of both KRSM and ECMS for all the time, hard work and dedication that was put into this successful project. Good job and keep up the good work!

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY SCIENCE BUILDING

September 2017 – Phase II of the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Science Center located in Richmond, KY officially opened last month and has become the largest facility of its type on any campus in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Much of the exterior envelop for phase II of the project was installed by Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) and included 30,000 square feet of SBS roofing, 2,500 square feet of vegetative roofing and more than 36,000 square feet of zinc wall panels.

The zinc wall panels for phase II of the building were selected to seamlessly integrate both phases. Another advantage of the high-end panels was the efficient manner in which they were able to be installed. The project began in 2014 and is currently pending LEED Gold.

KRSM Estimator Benson Phillips had just started as an estimator and was still learning when he first took on this project. “This was the largest project with the biggest scope I had ever bid on up to that point in my career, and I won” said Benson, “Seeing all of the different material used and the various application techniques was interesting. I have yet to see rock wool applied the same way on another building”.

Like every project, KRSM puts safety first and successfully completed the job without any issues. “The foreman, Rick Williams and his crew worked very hard to ensure that this project was completed safely and efficiently” said KRSM Project Manager Joe Minor.

Thank you to all KRSM employees who contributed to this successful project. Keep up the excellent work!

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT – OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY NRDT

August 2017 – The Ohio State University (OSU) North Residential District Transformation (NRDT) was a multi-million dollar, multi-year project that began in 2014 out of Columbus, Ohio. It was a design-build project that consisted of 11 different buildings and was led by KRSM Project Manager Paul Novak and KRSM Superintendent Herschel Morrison with the help of Project Manager Tomm Dunbar, Project Manager Bill Zonker, prior to his retirement, and Ohio Division Manager Pat Hurley.

Over the course of two years, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal crews worked hard to make sure the OSU NRDT was done on time while giving their best effort from start to finish. Altogether, KRSM provided the installation of 170,000 square feet of TPO Roofing, 24,100 square feet of Wall Panels and 10,300 lineal feet of Edge Metal. Of the 11 buildings, 8 buildings were dorms, one was a recreation and meeting center, one was a cafeteria and one was an entrance to an existing dorm. Even though all of these buildings were new construction, KRSM crews still had to face the challenge of operat ing while school was in session, giving students walkways around work zones as well as notifying surrounding buildings 48 hours i n advance of work schedule.

Paul Novak was assigned to the project as an intern and took over as the Project Manager after accepting a full time position with Kalkreuth following his graduation from the University of Cincinnati. Herschel Morrison was also promoted from Foreman to Superintendent during the course of this project. Together, they worked hard and made safety their first priority. “Team effort played a huge role in all aspects from our roofing and sheet metal crews to the office personnel who were involved” said Novak “and without Hersch, this job would have not been as successful as it was. The KRSM team truly did an outstanding job in getting this project completed”.
