KALKREUTH CREW AWARDED FOR SAFETY


March 2017 – On Wednesday, March 1, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s project at Morgan State University Behavioral and Social Sciences Center in Baltimore, MD received a surprise inspection from the company’s captive insurance company, Northeast Roofing Insurance (NERI). Our team passed the inspection and has been awarded with gift-cards for a job well done.

The crew included (pictured L to R) Justin Shultz, Joe Kramer, Chad Brandon, and Jeremy Persinger (sheet metal foreman). Also on the crew but not pictured were Dwayne Bonds, Mike Higgins, and Gary Baker.

Great job guys! We appreciate your hard work and dedication to safety! We sincerely appreciate Project Manager Chris Lemmon for his dedication to safety as well.

INAUGURAL KALKREUTH COMPANY MEETING & KRSM’S METAL FABRICATION FACILITY TOUR


MARCH 2017 – On Wednesday, March 15, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal held its Inaugural Company Meeting at The Highlands Conference Center in Triadelphia, WV. There were nearly 115
employees present at the meeting with an additional 25-30 employees live streaming the event from their home offices in Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. KRSM’s metal fabrication company employees also attended the event.Bill Good, recently retired Executive Director of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) served as a keynote speaker and kicked off the event with a “State of the Industry” address to inform and educate our employees about the up-and-coming trends and challenges for roofing and metal projects.John Kalkreuth, Company President, followed Bill with a “Past, Present, and Future” address to inform everyone of the company’s roots as well as present-day goals and objectives. Following lunch, David Hesse, KRSM Maryland division VP, Pat Hurley, Ohio division VP, Jeff Piazza, Kentucky division Manager, Chad McLeish, Estimating VP, and John Trifonoff, VP of KRSM’s metal fabrication facility, shared their unique stories with the crowd and how each of them have grown and developed alongside the company.
Jim Hurley,KRSM Executive VP, wrapped up with a summary of the purpose of the meeting and encouragement to all newcomers that upper managers are consistently reevaluating how to provide an advantageous future for all Kalkreuth employees. “We want you all to know there is opportunity here, and we are always working to provide that opportunity for the future leaders of the company,” Jim said.

FOREMAN SPOTLIGHT: OSVALDO “OZ” LUGO

MARCH 2017 – Osvaldo “Oz” Lugo with Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) West Virginia division is this month’s featured sheet metal foreman.

Oz began working for KRSM as a sheet metal worker in 2013 and became a sheet metal foreman in just six short months. Oz recalled his first project with KRSM was the Maryland Public Health Laboratory in Baltimore where he worked with former Project Manager (PM) Jeff Piazza before he was promoted to Kentucky Division Manager. Oz is currently working at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with PM John Sberna.

Oz has a total of 14 years experience in the industry and has worked on several high-profile projects during his time with Kalkreuth. One of his most memorable projects was actually his first project at the Maryland Public Health Laboratory because it utilized a newer panel system.

“Oz is a good worker and pays attention to detail,” said PM John Sberna who works with him frequently. “He’s very safety conscientious, a good leader, and keeps the crews happy.”

When asked about safety on the job, Oz said “I always put safety first and have not had a problem on a job in my 14 years of working. I make sure to call (Safety Manager) Jeremy Dvorcek to make sure I have all I need, and I always remember to know my limits. If I need help with something, I don’t hesitate to reach out for help, and I encourage my crews to do the same.”

Oz stated his sincere appreciation to KRSM for caring about its employees. “They treat you like a person and take such good care of you… bad days, good days, hot, cold, or rain I will always come to work.”

Oz lives in Frederick, Maryland with his wife Melani and has two children, Sofia (6) and William (almost 3). We are proud to have Oz as a member of the Kalkreuth family and sincerely appreciate his continuous hard work since he began in 2013.

KRSM RESIDENTIAL SHOWROOM GRAND OPENING EVENT


MARCH 2017 – On Saturday, March 25, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s residential division invited the community to join in a Grand Opening event at their new residential showroom at The Highlands in Triadelphia, West Virginia.

KRSM kicked off the Grand Opening weekend with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce (WACC) on Thursday, March 23, and then held a special Grand Opening event that Saturday from noon to 4pm. Event attendees were able to enter in a grand prize drawing for a $500 Visa gift card while enjoying drinks and snacks. KRSM also provided special service offerings for that weekend only, which included guaranteed material pricing for a year, free gutter cleaning for two years, or a free shingle upgrade when attendees scheduled a site visit while at the Grand Opening event.

“This event was a great way to involve the community and help everyone feel like a part of our success. It’s because of this great community of supporters that we have been able to open this new showroom,” said Residential/Service Manager Shawn Snodgrass.

NRCA COMPETITION RESULTS IN UNEXPECTED WIN FOR KRSM


MARCH 2017 – On Thursday, March 2, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Project Manager Paul Novak served as a mentor for a team of University of Cincinnati (UC) students who participated in the third annual Alliance Construction Management (CM) Student Competition hosted by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) at their International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas.

The four UC students who competed were Brian Mallernee (team captain), Matt Hudak, Daniel Kurtz, and Michael Kadash, all of whom have served one or more terms in the Kalkreuth Intern/Co-op Program. Paul Novak, who is an alumnus of UC, served as the Alliance Member Team Mentor and was able to generate a relationship with the UC CM professor who assisted the group in their presentation, Jason Mack.

“Even though the UC team did not win the competition, it provided an opportunity for Jason and I to discuss the need to increase awareness of the roofing industry among CM students within their curriculum,” Paul said. “Per Jason’s recommendation, KRSM has been invited to teach a roofing class at the University this fall. We are sincerely appreciative of Jason and and his efforts to advocate roofing.”

GC PRESENTS SAFETY AWARD TO KRSM CREW


On Friday, February 24, one of Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) Ohio division crews was recognized for outstanding jobsite safety performance. Messer Construction, General Contractor, awarded Kalkreuth at their Safety Rally for effective safety initiatives on the Mount Carmel East project in Columbus, OH.

Pat Christman, Project Manager for Messer, stated our crew has demonstrated a “commitment to safety” with pre-planning and execution of jobsite activities and provided lunch for the crew that following week. KRSM upper management also rewarded the crew with gift cards for their efforts.

The crew included (pictured L to R): Josh Carr, Herschel Morrison (Superintendent), James Reason, Nick Carr, Dwayne Morgan, and Kermit Tackett (Foreman). Also on the crew (not pictured) were James McElroy, Jeff Frye, and Lentwan Smith.

QUARTERLY SAFETY MEETINGS & RECOGNIZING SAFETY ACHIEVEMENT


MARCH 2017- Last month, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) regional divisions held their quarterly safety meetings beginning on February 3rd in Kentucky.
Seth Abraham, Director of Safety and Human Resources, attended each meeting and presented new job hazard analysis forms to the crews, discussed corporate safety statistics, and advocated proper protocol for reporting safety hazards and daily jobsite conditions.“I have seen positive changes in the safety culture, and our overall awareness and implementation of safety best practices has continued to improve,” noted Jeremy Dvorcek, Eastern Territory Safety Manager for KRSM.

A week after the Maryland division safety meeting was held, on February 17, one of their crews was recognized for safety achievement on a jobsite in Fort Belvoir, Virginia by the General Contractor, Clark Construction. That day, Clark provided a pizza lunch and safety certificate to the crew recognizing Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal as Safety Contractor of the Month. They were the only subcontractor on the job with a 100% safety reporting rate for on-time, efficient reports of Daily Jobsite Hazard Reports, Tool Box Talks, and Tool & Equipment Checks.

FOREMAN SPOTLIGHT: JULIO TEJADA


MARCH 2017- Julio Tejada with Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal’s (KRSM) Maryland division is this month’s featured sheet metal foreman.

Julio began working for KRSM as a sheet metal journeyman in 2006 and is now a sheet metal foreman. He recalled that one of his first projects with KRSM was the National Biodefense Agency and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) in Fort Detrick, Maryland, and he is currently working on multiple fast-paced, quick-hitting projects across Maryland.

Julio has a total of 25 years experience in the industry and has worked on several high-profile projects during his time with Kalkreuth. A few of the memorable projects he mentioned were Silver Spring Library, Frederick News Post, and the Concord Center.

“It is always a pleasure working with Julio,” said Operations Manager Ernie Giancola, who works with
him frequently. “His focus and attention to detail ensures that the quality of installation is always to the high standard KRSM strives for on every pro-ject.”
When asked about safety on the job, Julio said “I make sure my projects are completed safely, and I try to always lead by example.” He went on to say, “I care about my coworkers and don’t want to see anyone getting hurt.”

“One of the things I enjoy most about working for Kalkreuth is the relationships I’ve built with office staff and fellow sheet metal workers. These relationships promote good chemistry that contributes to a successful project outcome,” Julio added.

Julio lives in Laurel, MD and has two children, Christian (17) and Milton Cruz (16). We are proud to have Julio as a member of the Kalkreuth family and sincerely appreciate his continuous hard work since he began in 2006.
