FEBRUARY 2017- On Wednesday, February 22, Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal (KRSM) Senior Engineer Ed Calvert, LEED AP BD+C, GRP, organized a meeting and presented information on the new version of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design version 4 (LEED v4) green building rating system, which is now in effect for all new projects as of October 2016.
Estimators, project managers, engineers, and other personnel within the company, across all divisions, gathered to review the updates. Ed was able to pull information provided by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) in order to review differences and changes from the previous version of LEED, as well as how the new system will directly affect the roofing and wall system building trades.
“LEED is the future of construction,” Ed said. “It’s steadily gaining traction throughout the industry, and many regions and cities, such as DC and Pittsburgh, have begun to make green building practices mandatory. Everyone from design teams to general contractors to subcontractors needs to be aware of the implications of new-and-improved green building methods as they continue to increase in prevalence. It’s better for the environment, and it helps to create better buildings.”
LEEDv4 has introduced some stricter guidelines and tracking methods for materials used, waste disposal, storm water man-agement, and various other aspects of energy efficiency. “The entire KRSM team is striving to stay one step ahead,” Ed said.
