Project Vision and Community Presence

Rather than remain hidden like most utility plants, the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center stands prominently along a busy residential corridor. From the beginning, the goal extended beyond function alone. The design teams, at GBBN Architects and ZGF Architects, envisioned a facility that would serve as both infrastructure and landmark. As a result, the plant contributes visually to the surrounding neighborhood.

While the building delivers essential energy, heating, cooling, and medical oxygen, it also expresses architectural harmony. Its form responds directly to the adjacent roadway. The exterior walls subtly shift inward and outward, creating movement across the façade. Meanwhile, the roofline rises and falls in rhythm with the street’s curve. These gestures soften the building’s industrial purpose.

Architectural Expression and Façade Performance

In addition, the metal façade interacts with changing daylight throughout the day. Light and shadow animate the surface with shifting tones and reflections. At night, interior illumination glows through semi-reflective frosted windows. Consequently, the structure resembles a welcoming lantern within the community. The plant becomes both a provider of services and a visual anchor.

Kalkreuth’s Role and Scope of Work

Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal played a key role in bringing this architectural vision to life. The company executed the project’s complex exterior metal systems with precision. Specifically, Kalkreuth installed 5,500 linear feet of metal sub-framing. The team also fabricated and installed 1,500 linear feet of custom extrusions.

Furthermore, the scope included 13,000 square feet of metal wall panels. Associated trim installation completed the cohesive exterior system. Through careful coordination and craftsmanship, Kalkreuth ensured seamless integration of all façade elements. Ultimately, their expertise supported both the building’s performance requirements and its distinctive design presence.
